Kathakali
Kathakali is the only ‘total theatre’ in the world. Except for very few modern plays based on contemporary themes, most of the subjects or themes chosen for Kathakali are mythological with an intention of elevating the moral charisma and humoculuous approach of the viewer. Dance, action, costume, song and background music are excellently blended to make connoisseurs sit spell bound before the stage. The characters are classified into five. They are Pacha, Kathi, Kari, Thadi and Minukku. Pacha denotes noble personalities. Kathi if for heroic-wretches. Thadi (beard – red) is for wicked fools. Minukmku is for damsels, Brahmins and saints and Kari for devils. A huge oil lamp is lit and placed in the fore-front of the stage. Sankh (conch), Chenda (drum), Maddalam (timpano), Chengila (gong) and Elathalam (cymbals) are the major musical instruments played. In Kathakali, actors do not speak. Musicians positioned b ehind, sing the events and the dialogue, composed in poems set to Sopana style, control the actors, who communicate according to the song with hand gestures, facial expressions and body movements. Kathakali costume is the heaviest in multitude and magnitude.
Mohiniyattom
This is a scintillating dance form, originated in Kerala and is performed exclusively by ladies. This style, typified by its graceful, lasys rhythms, steps, mudras and expressions is said to have been composed as a ritual art in temples for performance by the Devadasis, devotee girls of the Lord.
